The Secret Museum of Mankind is a bit like a National Geographic written by Nazis. It's racist, exaggerated, and often total bullshit, but still an incredible collection of photos of tribes from across the continents. Published in 1935, the pictures are accompanied by hammy captions that convey the prejudices of that time (basically that non-Europeans were all savages). See below for a selection of images that show "the magic and mystery in queer lands where the foot of a white man has rarely tread..."
And, to accompany the NY Food Guide, here's a guided tour through the culinary world of Elvis Presley, as famed in his later years for what went into his mouth and hips as what came out. The King's passion for food is recounted by close friends, relatives and personal cooks who share the recipes that kept their idol happy, from the squirrel and raccoon dishes of his youth to the fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches that helped hustle along his timely demise...
Working the graveyard shift as a hotel receptionist must be astronomically dull, so you can kinda forgive this guy for having a little fun with an old, cantankerous Hungarian man who wandered into the lobby. Little did he know how mad Mr Farkas can get.
A new exhibition celebrating the work of British documentary filmmaker John Samson has just opened in the basement of the Seventeen gallery. Go there this weekend if you get a chance. See clips from the short films on show after the jump.
*More Quoted Than Seen runs until Saturday October 18th.
Another brilliant mixtape from one of the greatest men on earth, Perks & Mini's Misha Hollenbach aka Perks aka Roland Korg aka Boy George Michael aka Porkilucci for Beats In Space. He's better known for his PAM artwork, but as I've mentioned before, he's pretty good at mixtapes too.
Wow, this is the best band I've ever seen. They're like a female version of Yellow Magic Orchestra and Logic System, but all I know about them is that they are Japanese, they're called Cosmos, and this song is called "Spiral Dreams".
Have you seen this? It's an abandoned mansion somewhere in the wilds of Ohio that used to belong to
boxing/insanity's Mike Tyson. Apparently you can go there, walk around, and take photos
like it's some sort of old Persian ruins, but we hear if you spend the night you'll be awakened by his piercing laugh...
Everyone has a portrait - be it a class photo or a passport mugshot - that they would prefer to forget or (in more extreme cases) burn all existing copies of. But what about those rare moments when the lens captures your visage in all its grinning glory? Sexy People is a site that celebrates the perfect portrait. Here's a selection of our favourites...
I was watching the film TerrorVision last night and it was awesome. It got even better when I realised it starred Mary Woronov. Every now and then I'll watch a great 70s or 80s low budget film and
Woronov, more often than not, will be in it. She was part of Andy
Warhol's Factory, appearing in quite a few of his films, and was also a go-go
dancer for The Velvet Underground. She's basically one of the coolest women
ever.
This week the nerds at Voodoo Village focus on film. They spotlight Al Leong, star of 74% of all action flicks from the 1980s. They dig out clips from their favourite offensive movies, their favourite misogynistic movies, and their favourite movie special FX. To wrap it off, they gather all the best Dario Argento films. Your eyes can thank us later.
