Moscow is probably the most fashionable city on earth right now. Russia did "superpower turns into a dystopia of fake democracy, mega-wealth for a few, and economic decimation for the rest" ages ago! And so the Ruskies live in the Chinese century already. They're one step ahead, and living in a great place for fashion, art, and music, so I'm making no apologies for this second Russian fashion post in about a week. Dasha Yastrebova is a 19-year-old Moscow-based photographer who has already shot for Vogue. She shoots fashion stories about transsexual operations set in apartments covered in psychedelic trance illustrations and anti-masturbation slogans.
Her obsession with Russian adolescents, youthful excess, despondency, and self-neglect is informed, she says, by her father's studies of addiction as a narcologist.
For Dasha, Moscow is a living thing feeding off its inhabitants. "It's a peculiar place awash with alcohol but tight-assed with the rules ... Muscovites go out for the drama, and very few for the music."
Her shots often make clubbers look less like party kids and more like victims of all that pressure.
