Non si può introdurre Alejandro Jodorowsky in poche parole. Ha avuto molte vite, come un vecchio gatto: regista, ballerino, scrittore, drammaturgo innovativo e mimo; ha fatto anche lo sceneggiatore di fumetti, il giornalista, ed è stato un ottimo mago, praticando i tarocchi che leggeva settimanalmente in un bar di Parigi. Lo abbiamo incontrato a casa sua, a Parigi. Gli era sfuggito di testa che dovevamo fare un’intervista, ma ci ha raccontato comunque le sue memorie affascinanti.

Alejandro Jodorowsky: Vedi questo gatto…? È vecchio, molto vecchio. Deve avere 25 anni. Zoppica, è muto e sordo. Però è vivo. È un compagno. Una volta, quando ero molto giovane, mi stavo dirigendo a Parigi e la barca si era fermata a Barcellona per cinque ore. Avevamo il permesso di scendere, ero al verde e non sapevo dove andare. Per la strada vidi un cane randagio e decisi di seguirlo. Mi portò al mercato, poi al Barrio Chino, la zona delle prostitute, poi alla Sagrada Familia, la chiesa decorata da Gaudì. Fu la mia guida. Un cane può essere un mentore, sai.

Vice: Hai sempre avuto bisogno di un mentore?
Sì, perché non parlavo mai con mio padre. Mi umiliava. Era un negoziante autoritario e ateo. Non gli importava di nulla. Non ho avuto niente da lui, tranne due consigli: “Compra a poco e vendi a tanto,” e “Niente è vero.” Avevo bisogno di un archetipo paterno per uscire fuori dall’infanzia, perché mi desse quello che mio padre non mi ha dato.

Hai cominciato a girare film più tardi del normale, quando avevi 39 anni…
Ho sempre voluto recitare in un film, per me è l’arte suprema. Ho imparato l’arte del mimo con Marceau, il teatro con Topor e Arrabal durante gli anni del Panico, ho imparato la danza e a fare il burattinaio, tutto questo al fine di girare film. I miei maestri del cinema sono sempre gli stessi: Buñuel, i grandi sognatori, Freaks di Todd Browning. E oggi alcuni eccezionali registi asiatici.

Parlaci del tuo prossimo film.
Dovrei parlartene alla fine, quest’autunno disporrò di maggiori informazioni… La sceneggiatura parla del figlio di El Topo. Ho immaginato una vita in un mondo devastato, dopo la tragedia. La santità è sepolta tra due rocce d’oro su una piccola isola, ma per arrivare lì devi essere un uomo senza peccati, un santo. Dovremmo girarlo tra Spagna e Russia.

Cos’è successo a King Shot, il film che avevi annunciato tre anni fa, in cui sarebbero dovuti comparire Asia Argento e Marilyn Manson?
La sceneggiatura era buonissima: un casinò, il King Shot, in mezzo al deserto, in un mondo che cade a pezzi. Come succede sempre con i miei film, non puoi dire di cosa parlano, non esistono delle trame prestabilite. I miei lavori non possono essere riassunti in dieci righe. Ma dato che i soldi vengono dalle banche e dalla TV, ti servono queste cose. Soltanto gli investitori privati veramente pazzi sono pronti a fare dei film con me. Non posso aspettare i soldi della TV. L’industria cinematografica è diventata il canale dell’industria alimentare. I film devono essere semplici perché le persone vanno a vederli per digerire quello che hanno mangiato appena prima. E non puoi farli spaventare, altrimenti fanno le puzzette…

Il tuo terzo film, La montagna sacra, è stato prodotto nel 1973 da John Lennon.
Sì, grazie al mio produttore Allen Klein (che è morto quest’estate), che era anche il manager dei Beatles e dei Rolling Stones, e gestiva la Apple, casa discografica dei Beatles. A John Lennon piaceva l’idea, aveva sentito di El Topo. L’avevo incontrato solo una volta. Comunque non avrebbe potuto venire sul set in Messico, perché abbiamo girato in zone della montagna piuttosto selvagge.

Le riprese sono state un po’ pazze, vero?
Volevano tutti uccidermi. Duemila persone hanno marciato di fronte alla basilica di Guadalupe, dicendo che ero un altro Charles Manson, perché stavo cercando case coloniali. Però di fronte alla basilica più venerata del Messico c’era una porta coloniale davvero bellissima. La scena era semplice: un camion pieno di cadaveri nudi e insanguinati doveva passare davanti a quella porta. Niente, in pratica. Ma per farlo; devi spogliare della gente e ricoprirla di sangue finto e non lo puoi fare troppo lontano, lo devi fare in una tenda dietro alla basilica. Perciò avevamo 40 persone nude e insanguinate che aspettavano in strada. Nel giro di due ore l’intera città stava dicendo che non stavamo girando un film, ma che stavamo facendo una messa nera e io stavo insultando la santa Vergine, e duemila persone sono venute a chiedermi di andarmene…
Poi abbiamo avuto problemi con l’associazione dei charros.

L’associazione dei?
I charros sono i cowboy messicani, uomini virili con dei grossi cappelli. Li ho fatti venire per una scena dove avrebbero dovuto ballare con altri uomini che indossavano maschere antigas. Un ballo di travestiti con 300 coppie gay! Un charro è arrivato puntandomi la pistola al petto, e mi ha chiamato frocio. Mi voleva uccidere. Quando leggi i giornali, scopri che il Messico non è per niente cambiato. Ieri hanno ucciso un avvocato con 28 colpi. Allo stesso tempo, puoi realizzare un film con 3500 euro. Ho fatto così nel 1971 con El Topo.

Anche il Chile era così violento quando eri piccolo?
Prima di Pinochet, no; dopo, sì. I soldati, addestrati dai militari tedeschi, hanno cominciato a diventare una condizione reale. Avevano una mentalità disumana, bestiale. Ho cominciato a vivere a Santiago solo quando avevo circa dieci anni. Ero un po’ isolato nel villaggio. I miei genitori erano entrambi di origini russe. Mi trattavano come trattavano un nero negli Stati Uniti. Non riuscivo a farmi degli amici, così passavo il mio tempo in biblioteca. Ora penso che sia stata l’occasione della mia vita, ho creato il mio mondo personale.

Da dove viene la tua conoscenza delle religioni?
In un certo senso, da mio padre. Era ateo. Quando avevo quattro anni mi disse, “Dio non esiste.” Diede vita a una paura incredibile, così cominciai a leggere qualsiasi cosa che potesse calmarmi, metafisicamente parlando. Tutte le religioni, i movimenti esoterici, l’alchimia, la Cabala, ho letto tutto. Tranne l’astrologia—quella non mi è mai piaciuta.

Mmm, avevi una sceneggiatura per La montagna sacra?
Avevo una trama, ma ho creato la storia a poco a poco, ogni notte.

Dicono che hai fatto le riprese dopo aver preso dei funghi allucinogeni…
No, beh… In realtà, solo una scena è stata girata dopo aver preso i funghi. E abbiamo incasinato tutto. Dovevamo raggiungere un posto sacro, la cima della piramide. Io e gli attori avevamo deciso di essere tanto mistici quanto lo era il posto in cui eravamo. Ma ho fatto l’errore di non forzare il mio cameraman a prendere i funghetti magici come noi. Era sobrio. Ci vedeva e rideva di noi come si ride di un ubriaco. Aveva deciso di mettere una lente distorta per riprenderci in un modo ridicolo e psichedelico. Era un effetto merdoso su una scena pulita, bellissima e rara, che non si sarebbe dovuta toccare. Così abbiamo scalato la piramide, guidati dal nostro inconscio. Una volta lì ho scavato il terreno e ho estratto una pietra, un cubo che abbiamo portato sulla cima. Sulla cima abbiamo trovato un piccolo fiore, davvero molto piccolo: era magico, puro. E quel cazzo di cameraman aveva messo una lente distorta per cogliere questo, come se fossimo dei mostri… volevo ucciderlo.
Ho realizzato troppo tardi cosa avevamo fatto, eravamo in territori selvaggi, vergini, ho visto il caos soltanto una volta rientrato a New York. Sono fuggito dal Messico solo perché volevano mettere una bomba nel mio appartamento, urlando che ero malvagio. Avevo 30 ore di film, sai, e ne ha rovinato più di un terzo. Sono stato stupido a credere che se i tecnici fossero stati lucidi, avrebbero lavorato correttamente. Ma invece non avevano capito niente del film, non c’era comunicazione tra me e loro. Ci guardavano come se fossimo delle bestie selvagge e pensavano di saper fare qualsiasi cosa con la videocamera. Quando ripenso a quello che abbiamo mandato a monte, mi sento male.

Sul set de La montagna sacra, hai sottoposto i tuoi attori a dei trattamenti severi...
Sì, vivevamo tutti insieme, eravamo in dieci e dovevamo dormire solo 4 ore a notte, da mezzanotte alle 4 del mattino. Ci alzavamo e facevamo una doccia fredda. Poi meditavamo: mantra e così via. Venerdì, per esempio, era la giornata “oggettiva”. Non potevi dire cose tipo “Fa freddo” , perché è soggettivo. Tu hai freddo, ma non significa che tutti abbiano freddo. Dovevi raggiungere l’antioggettività. Avevamo una campanella per cancellare ogni segno di soggettività. Dobbiamo vincere il nostro ego, sai.

Come si fa?
Ci vedevamo come dei samurai metafisici. Era molto americano, nel senso che c’era un incredibile stock di droghe… Le droghe non mi entusiasmano per niente, così gli ho fatto credere che i poliziotti ci stavano tenendo d’occhio e ho buttato la droga nel water. Appena ne avevano bisogno, i dolci seguaci sono diventati dei mostri… In quel momento ho realizzato che ogni volta che meditavano per tre ore erano semplicemente fatti… tempi d’oro, comunque.
Avevo stipulato un contratto con un guru americano, Oscar Ichazo, che ha creato un gruppo di proto-analisi chiamato Arica. Offriva un accesso più veloce all’ “illuminazione”. Diceva che le varie religioni e discipline esoteriche avevano ognuna la propria tecnica per raggiungere l’illuminazione. La sua tecnica personale era un cocktail esplosivo—mescolava tutto e prometteva l’illuminazione entro soltanto due mesi. “Per te”, diceva, “Posso darti l’illuminazione entro otto ore”. Ok, dissi, andiamo… Gli diamo 11000 euro e lui viene in un lussuoso hotel in Messico. Chiacchieriamo, tira fuori un pacchettino di polvere arancione e me la fa bere. Avevo appena pagato 11000 euro per dell’LSD!!! Non stava funzionando, allora prese della marijuana tailandese e poi… vedevo Picasso, Renoir dalla finestra, sembrava Walt Disney con colori dappertutto. È durato otto ore.

Parlando di “influenze,” conoscevi i film di Glauber Rocha e Antonio Das Mortes, quando hai realizzato El Topo?
I due film erano al cinema contemporaneamente, nel 1971. Non sapevo del progetto di Rocha. Ho scoperto il suo film nello stesso momento in cui ho scoperto il mio. Gli eroi sexy e ribelli si assomigliano così tanto. Per certi versi eravamo amici. Glauber e io… era talmente dipendente dalla droga che era quasi impossibile parlargli.

Allora da dove viene il personaggio dell’ anti-cowboy solitario? Da Vince Taylor?
È possibile, Vince Taylor mi piace molto. Avevo visto un suo spettacolo in un cabaret di Pigalle. Ero lì con un gruppo di scrittori surrealisti, dato che lo spettacolo era diretto da Georges Bataille. Dopo quell’episodio, volevo che Vince Taylor suonasse con la sua orchestra in un happening per il Panico. Ma quel giorno ebbe una specie di crisi mistica, credeva di essere Dio. Così si sparò, nella stanza dell’hotel vicino al café de Flore. Sono riuscito ad avere solo i suoi musicisti. Il suo batterista era il figlio del pittore surrealista Hans Bellmer. Penso che la figura di El Topo provenga per metà da lui e per metà da un film di Elvis Presley che mi era piaciuto. A quel tempo nessuno a Parigi guardava film di Elvis Presley. Lo disdegnavano particolarmente.

Il fallimento del progetto di Dune ti ha ferito?
Sì, ma nello stesso tempo sono stato davvero fortunato, ho incontrato Moebius e ho fatto The Incal, e con questo, penso che abbiamo rivoluzionato il mondo dei fumetti. Per Dune avevo messo insieme una squadra incredibile: Dan O’ Bannon, Geiger, Moebius. Una parte del team ha fatto Alien e Blade Runner; ho creato questa sorta di fantascienza non realistica –ero contro il realismo di 2001. Volevo l’opera, le navi spaziali, qualcosa di barocco e di organico, ed era prima di Star Wars. Eravamo nel 1974. La sceneggiatura ha cambiato la visione americana sui film di fantascienza.
Sai perché non abbiamo potuto realizzare il film? Avevo appena avuto una discussione con Allen Klein, aveva bloccato i diritti di trasmissione de La montagna sacra. Niente più produzione, niente più soldi. Michel Seyedoux è venuto a farmi visita e mi ha detto, “Dammi un’idea e la concretizziamo.” Ho detto Dune. Non l’avevo letto, ma un amico mi aveva detto che era bello. Comprarono i diritti di Dune per un niente. Frank Herbert disse loro che erano pazzi, che non c’era proprio modo di portarlo sullo schermo. Cominciai a leggerlo sul treno mentre stavo andando a Parigi. Ne convenni che era impossibile, così riscrissi l’intera sceneggiatura. Orson Welles, Dalì, David Carradine, Udo Kier, Gloria Swanson, Mick Jagger, e Leonard Cohen avevano acconsentito a recitare nel film; i Magma e i Pink Foyd avrebbero dovuto fare la colonna sonora. La troupe che si occupava del trucco era favolosa, hanno disegnato qualcosa come migliaia di costumi. Doveva essere una distribuzione internazionale, non meno di 2000 teatri negli Stati Uniti. I manager americani si erano rifiutati perché Hollywood non voleva vedere una produzione francese al loro stesso livello. Ecco perché sono stati gli americani a realizzare Dune. Non ho mai visto il film di Lynch, non potevo. Ma, a parte questo, Lynch è un genio.

Come hai conosciuto Moebius?
Per Dune. Stavo passando sull’autostrada dalle parti di Lione per tornare a casa, mi sono fermato per bere un caffè in un bar oscuro. C’era un fumetto di Blueberry in giro, gli ho dato un’occhiata e ho chiesto a Moebius di incontrarci. L’ho incontrato per caso nell’ufficio del mio agente, stava consegnando una locandina che aveva fatto. Gli chiesi, Vuoi venire con me a Los Angeles e creare gli effetti speciali? “Quando?” Tra due giorni. “Non so se posso”. Ok, peccato, vedrò Druillet allora…”Ok, tra due giorni sarò all’aeroporto.” Di solito prima di lavorare ci incontravamo in un caffè, sotto all’ufficio, e sai come si chiamava quel caffè? L’Universo.
